First we have to pass under the Alte Steinbrücke. And the "strudels" which form under the bridge. According to our pamphlet strudel is an old word for spinning around. The strudel is the name for the whirlpools of water in the rapids created by the Stone bridge. They are caused by the massive foundations of the bridge supports forcing water through the tight spaces between them. This has caused many boats to capsize over the years.
Nearly the whirlpools. Carl is over the moon. Now is the ultimate test for the Capitan to take the boat through the very narrow gap at a full speed. It is narrow and the water so forceful. Needs a man of steel at the wheel.
Boat took some strain but it all went well. No dead persons and Leslie could open her eyes and take this picture of the strudels.
Phew made it!
View of the Danube on a cold and cloudy Friday.
Past the Walhalla. This is considered the pinnacle of the artistic creations of Bavarian King Ludwig I, who ruled from 1825 to 1848. Only deceased great personalities from the Germanic language family may be included, either as a memorial tablet or in form of busts. At present there are 192 memorials if "great German Speakers" in this hall of fame.
Since Carl and I do not consider ourselves "great German Speakers" we decided to give it a miss! But Carl must mention that there are also busts of prominent Swedes in the Walhalla.
No easy access to and from the Marina in Deggendorf.
Over the wall and cross the railway to go to the toilet. It is the green BajaMaja in the background.
The annual Gardenshow in Deggendorf. As it turned out also Deggendorf was attacked by the swedes in the 30 year war. Not much more information than that. If they were plundered and burnt or paid the protection fee we couldn't find out.
If the Knödelwerferin had been around the swedes would have met their match. But she was protecting the city two centuries earlier against the attacking Böhmens. She smashed them with a rain of well aimed Knödels.
