Leslie is pointing at the 1995 water level mark. It was about 10 m higher than today. It is unbelievable but apparently it happens every so often. The 1993 flood was only a few cm lower.
Today the Pegel in Köln is 190. It means that the water level is 190 cm above an average level. For us it means that there is enough water to continue our trip.
Now it is lunch time and Hermann has taken us to a Brauhaus for a Kölnisher Sauerbraten and to increase the Pegel with Kölschs.
Hermann has taken us to several Brauhauses where we have tasted Kölnisher Spezialitäten und Kölschs. Although the Brauhauses are enormous they give an intimate feeling in a lively atmosphere. The waiters are mostly middle-aged men with a special attitude.
The modern art museum in Köln is Museum Ludwig. An impressive building with a great selection of modern art and exhibitions.
On top of ML. An extremely fantastic buliding.
An exhibition in progress. The artist is letting bees do the work. There are live bees fixing the hair of the sculpture. All visitors were warned not to come close to the busy bees.
Homemade apple cake with Hermann and his sister Hildegard at her home in Köln. What a treat! It was the nicest apple cake. She says she has 5 recipes for apple cake. We must come back again.
And the sparkling wine to follow the apple cake.
Thank you Hildegard and good bye Hermann. Thank you for showing us the secrets of lovely Köln.
Some of the many interesting titbits we learnt from Hermann:
-the relics of the three wise men are in a gold case on the alter in the Cathedral
-the history of 4711 eau de cologne
-the Heinzelmänchen were little naked manikins who did all the housework in secret so no one ever saw them until the baker's wife sneaked up on them. After that they left Köln and never came back.
Maybe the Heinzelmänchen doing our blog?
