At Johannisberg the art of producing the finest wines from auslese and spätlese was developed about 150 years ago. The story goes that permission to harvest the wine was given by the bishop. The messenger for some reason was delayed for a considerable long time so the wine maker decided to harvest anyway. The picked wines proved to produce a delicate somewhat sweeter wine that got the jubilant approval from the godly authorities. Since then we can all enjoy the different "leses".
Lunch at Schloss Johannisberg
Wein kauf at Schloss Johannisberg. We managed to carry boxes with 6 bottles of wine each in he basket on the bikes, much to the amusement of the general public.

It seems like midsummer will be spent in the company of 5000 Harley Davidsson bikers attending the annual Magic Bike Festival. HOGs all dressed in HD apparels. Brumm brumm, vrom vrom. Burn burn
The strongest current on the Rhine is just before Bingen. We have been told that at this particular spot there was a 80 cm drop, waterfall. In the 1700 's after the discovery of gunpowder, a 4,5 metre gap was blasted in the rock but the result was catastrophic because the water level upstream was lowered to such an extent that the foundations of churches and other buildings collapsed. Later the gap was widened and is today 120 m wide. It was tough going for us, we struggled along at less than 5 km an hour. From where this photo is taken we could watch the upstream barges really taking strain and the downstream barges whizzing past.
Took a 11 km hike from Rübesheim to Asmannshausen to taste the special red wine they produce there. It is Spätburgunder which only produced here. On the way we stopped at this little alcove where you can help yourself to a glass of wine. You just need to swipe you credit card. Carl consumed almost all their stock, proof being the 5 empty bottles on the table ( this is not true!)
The quaint little town, Asmannshausen.
Midsummer eve spent walking back from Asmannshausen in a enchanted forest. Midsummer nights dream?
