Oberwinter-Brohl, 15 June

The harbour master in Oberwinter told us that Brohl was much nicer than Neuwied so we set off for a short trip.

On the way we passed the remains of the Remagen bridge. Here on the west side

and here on the east side

The Marina in Brohl. The Hafenmeister gave us some advice of what to do in Brohl. We asked about renting bicycles but he said no no this is only a little town.

But he gave us the direction to the Vulcan Experess. A steam train that takes you up the Brohl valley to the top of the vulcan. The railway was built 115 years ago to help transporting the different types of volcanic rocks from the quarries. Many of the buildings in Brohl were built from these volcanic rocks.

Volcanic Express river station.
On the way up the valley we passed Schweppenburg mansion. Here they produce the mineral water Brohler. Not Schweppes even if some people on the train said so. But volcanic mineral water is a big thing in the Brohl valley. A more famous brand is Tönissteiner.

At the top.
Exhausted after the trip up the valley.
