Köln- Oberwinter, 14 May

We left Köln early in the morning stonking our way up the Rhine. We passed Bonn on the way. The scenery is changing dramatically from flat landscape to more mountainous. Castles and castle ruins on the mountain sides and hill tops. We are getting into the heart of the Rhine. Will be interesting.

Passing Bonn
The Marina in Oberwinter.
Walking between Oberwinter and Remagen. We walked the 5 km to the next town Remagen, passing a village, Unkel, on the way. The reason we went to Remagen was to see the remains of the  Lundendorff  bridge which played a part in shortening the Second World War. The bridge was captured by the soldiers of the US 9th armoured division.  Hitler ordered the bridge to be destroyed with V2 rockets ( fired from Peenemunde) but it only collapsed 10 days later. The remains of the bridge is now a museum and a memorial to Peace.

The remaining part if the bridge on the left side of Rhine, in the direction of the flow of the river.
